Random collected thoughts on design

Random thoughts on design's basic constructs, the contexts in which these constructs live, and what out methods really help us do.

Collecting a couple of random thoughts where I can find them again. Considering this a crazy check as well: chime in if you think any of this is crazy.

In design, we model four constructs:

  1. Actors (direct and indirect stakeholders)
  2. Interfaces
  3. Interactions
  4. Systems

Actors use an interface to engage in an interaction bound by a system.

We place these constructs in four contexts:

  1. Mental (user’s mind)
  2. Spatial (place, layout)
  3. Temporal (sequence, prior- and next-steps)
  4. Social (community)

Our methods help us accomplish one (or several) of three activities:

  1. Generate data (discover)
  2. Analyze (model)
  3. Communicate (validate)
